Wallis House

History

The Wallis house was built about 1850 and is on the national Register of Historic Places. Nannine Clay Wallis bequeathed her estate on Pleasant Street to The Garden Club of Kentucky, Inc. in 1970 to continue her love of arboriculture and horticulture and to share this love with others, especially children. Mrs. Wallis was the founder of The Garden Club of Kentucky and served as president, 1933-1935. The 4.5 acre grounds include many gardens and some trees that date back 200 years.

About Wallis House

The Wallis House consists of eighteen rooms, with three full baths and an elevator. There are two double parlors, and a small upstairs apartment in the rear that is entered from the side of the house. Each room is decorated with furnishings from the era. The stairway in the front hall leads to a landing backed by a beautiful large stained glass window, and on a bright day with sunlight shining through the lovely colors it is truly a celestial sight.

About the Arboretum

The Wallis Arboretum is considered one of the finest old tree collections in Central Kentucky. The Wallis Arboretum provides an educational facility and environment where all may find beauty and a better understanding of the world around us. The first trees were planted in the mid-1850s at a time when having the newest tree introduction was a status symbol. The majority of the planting was under the direction of Nannine Clay Wallis for whom the Arboretum was named. Mrs. Wallis was one of the founders of The Garden Club of Kentucky. Later, she was its president as well as that of The National Council of State Garden Clubs. Under the direction of The Garden Club of Kentucky, Inc. and The Wallis Arboretum, the tradition continues today with the planting of the newest varieties and preserving the old.
